Chapter 28

Astrid

“So all I’m saying is, what’sssss uuuuup, cuzzz?” Ophelia smirked at Beckett from across the table.

The light of day streamed in through the library windows. We officially had two days left to face the warlock world and the council. Even though it’d only been hours, Beckett ultimately decided to tell the others his family lineage, and I was here for it. Maybe we weren’t together, but in this I could help. I was part of the heirs, and I would be part of this. Even now, Cross and Ophelia occupied the space across from Beckett and I. Tilly was at the other end of the table. That damn scroll was sitting in the middle of all of us. Maze and Logan were nowhere to be found, and this was one of those times we needed them.

Beckett sighed. “We are very, very, very distant cousins. Not like first cousins or anything.” He glanced down at his watch. “I wanted to wait for the others.”

Tilly leaned back in her chair and propped her slipper-covered feet on the table. “I saw Maze leave earlier.”

Ophelia. “Oh, right. I gave him one of my portal potions.”

“It’s so weird ’cause your dad was old as hell, and Beckett’s side is like, generations later.” Tilly laughed. “Kind of gross, if you think about it.”

Ophelia rolled her eyes. “Damn, Tilly, it’s not like I’m trying to be kissing cousins with Beckett. Although I could be…”

“No, you couldn’t,” Beckett and I answered at the same time.

“If you say so.” Ophelia shrugged. “Besides, witches and warlocks age differently, but yeah, my dad was old as shit.” She turned back to Beckett and gave him a huge smile. “It’s kind of nice knowing I’m not the only one from the dark side of magic.”

Beckett just looked at her, but deep down I felt that internal flinch of being branded as the bad warlock.

I cleared my throat. “You have Zinnia, too.”

Ophelia tapped her finger on the scroll. “Yeah, but she’s not as old-school magic as us. It’s kind of nice, you know, not to be the only big baddy.”

Beckett dropped into a chair across from her. His lip were pressed into a thin line.

Just then, the doors flew open and Zinnia strolled in. “Did someone just say my name?”

Tucker stood right beside her. “Got your text; what’s up?”

Sometimes I forgot how powerful they both were, and yet they looked so normal. Scary but kind of normal. Kind of. Aside from the tiny flames dancing over Tuck’s arms—totally normal.

I glanced from Beckett to the rest of the room. “Beckett, you want to tell?”

“We’ve got a new family member!” Ophelia blurted out.

Cross shook his head. “Babe, your name isn’t Beckett.”

Zinnia’s eyes widened. “What does that mean?”

“Penndolyn had a child, a child she hid from Alataris, who went on to carry the line forward. Beckett’s mother came from Penndolyn’s line,” I explained as quickly as I could so he wouldn’t have to yet again. “And now we need to decide if we free her or not.
